How the NPS calculation works
Contributions compound monthly until age 60: Corpus = P × (((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) / i), with P as your monthly contribution, i the monthly return, and n the months until you turn 60. At maturity, up to 60% can be withdrawn tax-free as lumpsum; the minimum 40% must buy an annuity that pays your pension.
Worked example
Starting at age 30 with ₹10,000 per month at an assumed 10% return:
| Monthly investment | ₹10,000 |
| Expected return | 10% p.a. |
| Years to 60 | 30 years |
| Projected corpus | ≈ ₹2.26 Cr |
| Tax-free lumpsum (60%) | ≈ ₹1.36 Cr |
| Annuity pot (40%) | ≈ ₹90.4 L |
| Monthly pension @6% | ≈ ₹45,210 |
